Washington and other places have no intention of forcing people to wear masks despite a surge in COVID-19 cases

Coronavirus infection rates have risen again in Washington, Maryland, and Virginia. The number of new COVID-19 cases in a single day this week was at least three times higher than in late March. But local governments have more broadly adopted a “live with the virus” policy and have no intention of imposing new quarantine rules to contain the outbreak or reintroducing mandatory masks.

“It seems that local government officials have completely given up on the idea of public health measures to slow the spread of the virus,” said Eric Toner, a senior scientist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Lushniak, dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Health, said there is no denying that the outbreak is a struggle for the immunocompromised, but he doesn’t see a need for new vaccination measures unless there is a significant spike in hospitalizations for COVID-19 patients.

The Gallup poll, released May 11, was conducted from April 15 to April 23. According to the results of the survey, only about 31% of American adults surveyed said they were very or somewhat worried about catching the Coronavirus.
