The new strain of omicron spread rapidly with 145,000 new cases reported in the United States in a single day

There were 145,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the US in the past day, far exceeding the one-day average of about 90,000 over the past week, according to data released by Johns Hopkins University on Monday. In the past week, the US reported 617,000 new COVID-19 cases and more than 2,000 deaths.

Based on its own statistics, Reuters reported that the NUMBER of new coronavirus cases in the United States rose again to 97,000 in a single day from about 73,000 a week ago. The number of hospitalized patients has also continued to rise from a low of 12,000 in mid-April to 16,500 last week and now to nearly 20,000.

According to data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday, about half of the new COVID-19 cases confirmed last week were infected with the new subtype of the Omicron strain, BA.2.12.1. This subtype has been spreading rapidly in the United States since mid-April and has become the dominant circulating strain in much of the East Coast of the United States.

The omicron strain has recently evolved into several new subtypes, including BA.2.12.1, ba.4 and BA.5.

On the same day, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration revised its emergency use authorization for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, approving a Booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine for people ages 5 to 11 who have completed two doses of the vaccine at least five months after the second dose. At this point, The Pfizer vaccine booster is extended to all people age 5 and older.
