Wennington fire: Put on your N95 masks as 40°C heatwave engulfs the UK and a street catches fire Photograph: Ian Woods /> A burning house in St Helen’s Crescent, Wennington, near Little Wennington, north of London was the scene of another devastating house fire after temperatures hit more than 39C across the country on Saturday afternoon. At least seven people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation injuries, while the cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. The victims are reported to be four adults and three children aged between five and eight years old.

The cause of the blaze
It’s not yet known what caused the blaze, but firefighters are investigating. The fire started in the early hours of the morning and quickly spread. It took several hours to bring under control. More than 80 firefighters were called to the scene. The fire has now been extinguished and an investigation is underway. Residents have been advised to stay indoors with windows closed and doors shut. Anyone who smells smoke should call 999 immediately. If there’s a fire nearby, leave the area and call 999. If you’re told to evacuate, do so calmly and remember that it’s safer outside.

The Wennington fire started at around midday on Sunday. At least 20 firefighters were sent to tackle the flames and stop the spread of the blaze. The cause of the fire is not yet known. The intense heatwave that has been gripping the UK is thought to be a contributing factor. Temperatures have reached up to 40°C in some parts of the country. The fire comes as a warning to others to take precautions in this hot weather.
