Without the Mask Mandate, Schools would Become Transmission Hotspots

Two years into this pandemic, keeping unproven measures in place is no longer justifiable. Although no district is likely to roll back COVID policies in the middle of the Omicron surge, at the top of the list of policies we should rethink once the wave recedes is mandatory masks for kids at school.

Covid restrictions easing across Europe despite a surge in cases. But kids are not suggested to remove the masks so quickly.

Firstly not every child has been vaccinated. If they are infected with the Coronavirus, they are completely unprotected. They will also face the same after-effects as adults, such as a loss of smell and taste.

Secondly, it comes as kids are beginning to assemble in large numbers inside schools — the exact spots most conducive to a rapid viral transmission. Once a student is found to be infected, it means a classmate or teacher who had a rough encounter with him is more likely to be infected, according to records from the past two years. And according to different studies, schools with mask mandates have lower COVID-19 transmission rates than schools without one.

Surgical masks are loose fitting and provide only barrier protection against droplets, including large respiratory particles. Surgical masks do not require fit testing. N95 FFRs are tight-fitting respirators and require fit testing.
