Cruise ship docks in San Francisco with COVID-19 cases on board

An unknown number of passengers and crew on a Princess cruise ship in California have tested positive for COVID-19. The ship with the infected docked in San Francisco on Sunday and was scheduled to depart again on Monday afternoon.

The crew of the Ruby Princess contracted the virus during a 15-day cruise through the Panama Canal. Princess Cruz said everyone on board had been vaccinated before departure. Princess Cruz did not say how many passengers were infected with COVID-19 on the ship that disembarked on Sunday.

In the early days of the pandemic, cruise operators were hit by COVID-19 and ships carrying infected passengers were barred from docking in California and Florida. Another cruise ship owned by Princess Cruises, The Supreme Princess, was quarantined at sea for six days after 21 people on board contracted the virus.

The number of cruise ship bookings has plummeted in the last two years, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention again warned against taking a cruise regardless of a person’s vaccination status. Cruise lines lost $63 billion and laid off thousands of workers in 2020 and 2021, according to industry data. The Cruise Lines International Association says it expects the industry to recover fully next year.

Alongside CDC director Robert Redfield as well as Health and Human Services secretary Alex Azar, Trump fielded questions regarding the government action to Covid-19, the disease that has so far infected more than 100,000 people around the globe and eliminated more than 3,500– including at least 19 in the United States . As a press reporter, in general I’m not supposed to state something like this, but: The president’s declarations to the press were distressing. .
