Particulate Respirator Recommendations
The Boston Public Health Commission is urging residents to resume wearing masks indoors as the city experiences an uptick in COVID-19 cases. The best type of mask to protect yourself and others is a particulate respirator, which filters out fine particles in the air and can provide better protection than cloth masks. Look for a mask with the N95 designation, which means it filters out at least 95% of particles. If you don’t have an N95 mask, any other type of particulate respirator will do. You can also make your own dust mask by cutting the top off a two liter soda bottle and inserting gauze pads on both sides of the opening before securing them with rubber bands. You’ll need to wash your hands before making or handling this homemade mask so that you don’t contaminate it with germs or viruses.
