How to Protect Yourself from Air pollution: With the coming of winter, more and more cases of respiratory diseases are being reported. 

Cold air and pollution together trap pollutants and make the air toxic.  Doctors suggest that people should be cautious, especially if they have respiratory problems.  

Air pollution: As October draws to a close and winter sets in, air quality in different Indian cities is expected to plummet.  While the impact of Diwali was relatively small this year, especially in Delhi-NCR, many experts pointed out that the reason could be that Diwali came earlier this year, which meant higher temperatures.  

As temperatures drop and winter progresses, more cases of respiratory illness are being reported.  “It’s easier to get asthma in the winter because it worsens breathing problems.  Usually, during this time, there is a sharp drop in air pollution and the air is full of pollutants.  Therefore, it is important to take care of yourself, “said Dr Sandeep Garg, senior consultant in lung and sleep medicine at Max Super Specialist Hospital in Salimarbagh, Delhi.

Effects of air pollution: Affecting the lungs and other organs  

Although air pollution seriously affects our lungs, the bad effects are not limited to them.  “Pollution itself is a big health problem,” said Dr. Mayank Saxena, senior consultant in the pulmonary Department of Vaishali (Ghaziabad), Max Hospital.  It affects not only the lungs, but other organs as well.  Particles like pm2.5 can enter the body through the lungs and blood, and can also reach other organs.”  He added: “People who already have respiratory problems face further problems.  The difficulty in breathing increased.  During this time, we see more outpatient visits and hospitalizations.  Many patients have to undergo intensive treatment, including the use of nebulizers.  In addition, new patients who did not previously have breathing or breathing problems suddenly developed these problems because of the toxic air.”  

How to Protect Yourself from Air Pollution: In 5 steps  

Dr. Mayank Saxena outlined the following steps to combat the effects of air pollution:  

1) Always use an N95 mask to cover your nose and mouth.  

2) Change your clothes when you get home from outside.  Wash your hands and face with soap and water.  

3) Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated  

4) Watch your diet.  Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables;  Basically, focus on eating nutritious foods.  Avoid fast food  

5) Use air purifiers indoors  

Many experts, like Dr. Garg, also advise that when air quality is very bad, people must avoid going outside if possible.  “Avoid early morning walks, when pollution levels are at alert levels,” says D Garg.
