A third of the world’s population remains unvaccinated against COVID-19

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said vaccinating 70% of the population in all countries against COVID-19 is essential to control the outbreak, and priority should be given to health workers, older people, and other high-risk groups. Many middle – and high-income countries have achieved this goal, and there is a decoupling between the number of deaths and the number of cases. Some high-income countries are now giving their populations a fourth dose of vaccine. But a third of the world’s population has yet to be vaccinated against COVID-19, including 83% of Africans.

So far, 483 million people worldwide have been infected with Coronavirus, a disease that has claimed more than 6 million lives. To address future threats, WHO is launching a new strategy to scale up genome sequencing of deadly pathogens with “epidemic and pandemic potential”.
